Our first visit to the Glamping Show was a great experience. The feedback from visitors about our container accommodation was outstanding and we enjoyed chatting with everyone about their site plans. Alongside the show exhibition there was a seminar programme covering topics such as marketing, site technology, planning and the political landscape of the industry.
Here’s the top things we took away from the show that we think could help your glamping business:
- Accommodation is key – it’s important to identify what your guests are looking for when it comes to somewhere to rest their head. For new business owners it’s important to research what your competitors are offering locally and decide where your site fits. Many established sites are looking to add accommodation which is different from their current offering, giving guests more choice and more reason for repeat bookings. Adding a shipping container conversion was the point of difference that many visitors had been looking for.
- Experiences Matter – Again and again we are hearing that guests are looking for more than just a campsite, have a think about what you can offer that brings the experience to life. From stargazing to alpaca trekking the opportunities are endless for creating new revenue streams and giving your guests a truly memorable stay. We met the fabulous Blackberry Alpacas at the show, speak to them to find out how to leverage your acreage and get started with alpaca experiences.
- Don’t overlook the essentials – It might not be glamorous but health and safety, insurance, booking systems and maintenance plans are all vital to the smooth operation of your glamping business. It’ll pay off in the long run if you set this up properly at the start – don’t be afraid to utilise experts in these areas to help you get it right. Organisations like the CLA can be a great starting point for expert advice and guidance on regulatory matters.
- Off grid is easier than you think – As evidenced by exhibitors at the Glamping Show creating an off grid accommodation solution is entirely possible. From battery storage from Portable Power Technology to waterless toilets from WooWoo Waterless Toilets, there are suppliers who can work with you to create a fully off grid solution for your site.
- Don’t be overwhelmed by planning permission – Whilst it can be possible to get an exemption from planning for your glamping site don’t be put off by the planning process. There are expert consultants available to talk you through the key considerations and help you get full planning for your site. Our planning partners at Greenfinch were also at the Glamping Show and were able to give on the spot advice to visitors as well as arranging more detailed consultations.
- Politics and Glamping do mix – The introduction of GITA UK (Glamping Industries Trade Association) in 2024 has brought a voice for the industry to help advocate for positive change and provide practical support to members. At their seminar on Saturday it was emphasised that politics affects all aspects of your business from regulations to rates to the wider economy influencing guests to book a holiday. John White from GITA shared some great tips for glamping sites including the importance of networking with local associations, your local councillor or MP. We’ll cover more on this in a future blog.
