Iron & Pine Highly Commended at Scottish Property Awards

Bothan, Isle of Coll, Seven Container Home

Iron & Pine are honoured to have been highly commended by the judges at the Herald Property awards in the ‘Individual New Build Or Small Development’ category.

We were shortlisted for our seven container home, Bothan, on the Isle of Coll. Alongside four other stunning projects each house was visited by members of the judging panel ahead of the awards ceremony.

The house on Coll was built for owners Doug and Jane MacDowall and designed by architect Phil Graham. The Iron and Pine team brought the dream to life in their workshop in Dalbeattie in just 12 weeks before sending the containers to the island where they were assembled on site in just ten days.

In the months following Doug and Jane have lovingly finished the interior design being guided by the landscape and nature surrounding them. Each aspect of the home has been considered down to the smallest detail.

“The main thing for us is that we ensured the outside did all the talking. When you have so much glass in one building it’s the outside that tells the inside what it wants to be!” says Jane, a creative consultant and leadership coach. “Choosing the correct paint colour was painful! I tried all the designer paints on the market to get the correct green but ended up getting a colour specially mixed”.

“Because the building is open plan it was important to us that nothing broke the flow of the space and so the dark wood flooring is the same throughout as it the paint which is the same on the walls and ceiling to ensure everything is easy on the eye and again the outside is where the focus is”

“The shipping container has a very industrial feel so that also guides the interiors” says Doug, who creates custom built Defenders with his team in Edinburgh. “The containers are made out of corten steel which turns to a stunning rusty colour as it weathers. To bring that look inside we could some incredible corten steel-coloured tiles again to bring the outside in”

The judging panel said they were really impressed with the design and build of Bothan and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to award a commendation to Iron & Pine acknowledging the quality of the entry.

Co-founder of Iron & Pine, Alistair Fell said “We’re delighted to have been recognised at these awards alongside some outstanding designs. It’s a testament to all of the team in Dalbeattie who worked so hard to bring this project to life for Doug and Jane.”

Luke Mazs, co-founder, added “We think the future of house building lies in modular construction, it’s sustainable and quick. Hopefully this national recognition will make more people aware of the possibilities that are available.”
